Public Art: Paths to Satisfaction.
A four part panel discussion on the process of soliciting, selecting, installing and maintaining public art.  Our panel will cover copyright and contract issues, the one percent for art program implemented by Kansas City and others, and their experiences with specific public art projects sponsored by governments, private businesses and individuals.  Steven J. Braun, an attorney with Krigel & Krigel, P.C. who has practiced art law for 15 years, will offer “A History of Public Art in the World in Two Minutes,” an overview of current copyright and contractual issues, and act as the moderator.  Beth Nybeck and Matthew Dehaemers, accomplished artists whose work is installed as public art across the United States, will describe their experiences and hopes for the future.  Porter Arneill, an artist and the Public Art Administrator for Kansas City, Missouri, and April Bishop, the Cultural Arts Coordinator for the City of Leawood, Kansas, will review the process, documentation and contracts involved in public art projects.  We will have an uninhibited discussion of the wonderful public art that enriches our lives, and how it came to be.  Substantial time will be reserved for questions from those attending.  Reference material will be available on DVD.

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014
Daveys Uptown Ramblers Club
3402 Main St. KCMO

The night before Thanksgiving.  We will be celebrating the one and only Neil Young.  One of the worlds greatest songwriters as well as a spokesperson for the voiceless.

A heartfelt and huge Thank You to Alexis Barclay for making this happen.

The musicians involved in this event represent some of the greatest in KC and beyond.  Shows like this happen once in a great while and what better way to give thanks for what we have than to give back to our community in a way that brings people together and spreads joy.

Here’s a little of what people have been saying:
Tim Finn, Music Writer for The Kansas City Star and Ink, wrote that Wednesday MidDay Medley was the “Best Place To Hear Local Music On The Radio: The place to listen to new local music and often hear performers talk about it.” (December 4, 2013)

PEdaljets album

In June 2013, the story was tentatively about some wilfully obscure 80s underground act returning out of the black with brand new songs. Then the story changed. The Pedaljets have returned with a remarkable album, a real album, with variations on a theme—sometimes Heaven and Hell, other times Past and Present, then Love lost and Loneliness, all broken up, broken and back together again. It’s a kind of gunpowder—jagged punk occasionally shaded with delicate vocals, the variable sparseness of a dark, dank garage, and then the unexpected vicissitudes of guts, glory, and a romantic forgetfulness that’s been mixed up like saltpeter, charcoal, and sulfur. Basic chemistry.
Here’s a little of what people have been saying:
“This cruel unjust world will likely never give this band their deserved appreciation. The romantic in me would like to think The Pedaljets don’t give a fuck. 9 out of 10.” Earbuddy
“Salvoes of high-powered melodic punk, laced with Beatles harmonies…prove affirmative and energizing with hard-won wisdom at the core.” Uncut, 8 out of 10
Vocally-driven, high-energy synth rock from the heartland
Sure, we’re spinning feisty metaphoric odes on life, love, friends, enemies, even mythical beasts, but that’s just the icing on this brand of high-energy, vocally-driven synth pop we call our own. The hooks and harmonies are free of charge.
Here’s a little of what people have been saying:
“… characteristic pop genius with deconstructive melodic sensibilities.”
“… deliciously catchy pop songs that are just off-kilter enough to make you uncomfortable, but with big enough hooks to drag you along for the ride.”
-Wildy’s World, December 2012-

Philistines logoTHE PHILISTINES

Interstellar psychedelic rock ‘n roll from Kansas City.
The Philistines combine an array of musical styles, influences, and abilities, with members handpicked from various factions of the KC music scene by songwriter Cody Wyoming. The result: an undeniably high caliber of moody, provocative, psychedelic, bombastic sounds.
Led by the ferocious vocals and unbridled stage presence of Kimberely Queen, Wyoming and Rod Peal send out a barrage of spaced-out, razor sharp guitars, backed by the pummeling rhythmic onslaught of drummer Steve Gardels and bassist Michelle Bacon, all tied together by the melodic tapestries of Josh Mobley’s keyboards.
Here’s a little of what people have been saying:
“The Philistines came together with a simple agenda: Hang out together while cultivating the best possible live show. Mission accomplished, on both counts. Chalk it up to professional respect riding a particular high, sure. But sometimes musicians just fall in love. And sometimes you can hear it.”
–Natalie Gallagher, The Pitch / September 2, 2014

90.1FM Presents: Truckstop Honeymoon, Cowgirl’s Train Set, and Carswell & Hope at Lawrence Arts Center

  TSH LiveTruckstop Honeymoon – 9:30pm

Hollering with all their hearts over a five string banjo and a doghouse bass, Truckstop Honeymoon live the life they sing about. Touring across three continents with four kids and a truck load of songs, Katie and Mike West tell stories about the strangeness of everyday life. Their music combines elements of bluegrass, music hall jazz and straight up rock’n’roll. Vaudevillian wit and showmanship spike their energetic live shows, while the fearless honesty of their songs touches the hearts of listeners around the world.

CGTSCowgirl’s Train Set – 8:30pm

Cowgirl’s Train Set is a Lawrence, KS-based outfit of 7 musicians that takes traditional American music styles and combines them in an unpredictable fashion. Blend gypsy swing, bluesy boogie, bluegrass, folk balladry, pirate shanties and punk aggression together, then boil them down to brew a typical Cowgirl’s Train Set show.

ch-wall-smilesCarswell & Hope – 7:30pm

From the Midwest seed-bed of indie-rock, Carswell & Hope bring vintage rock sounds and sensibilities together with big harmonies, carefully crafted textures and inventive songwriting. Songwriter Nick Carswell is originally from Ireland and has found a new home on the plains of Kansas. The tone is a blend of psychedelic, Pink Floyd interrupting Motown, channeling Van Morrison and Wilco. Think Mumford & Sons meets Sigur Ros, and Glen Hansard shows them around town.

90.1FM KKFI is proud to announce that, as of September 23rd 2014, we are a voter registration location for Kansas City, MO.  To my knowledge we are the first broadcast station in Kansas City, MO to be a voter registration location.

September 23rd is National Voter Registration Day so we chose that as a kickoff to what will be a continuing part of our mission to help spread information out about things that matter.  We at 90.1FM are here to serve the community and this is but one way we can do that.  This is the beginning of what will no doubt be a long standing tradition here at our community radio station.

We have had staff and volunteers trained by Ted Growney of the Kansas City Election Board.  Ted is a more than 20 year veteran of the election board and was very informative.  More than 15 people received training on Sept 11, 2014 right here at the 90.1FM KKFI Studios.  We will have registrars here to register voters that live in both Kansas City MO and Jackson County.

IMPORTANT EXCEPTION: If you live in any other county than Jackson or any other city than Kansas City, we will not be able to register you to vote.  We will have voter applications for the surrounding area to hand out for citizens to mail in or deliver to the proper election board.
