RADIO UNNAMEABLE Directed by Paul Lovelace and Jessica Wolfson
Documentary film about legendary radio personality Bob Fass who revolutionized the FM dial on listener supported New York station WBAI by serving as a cultural hub for music, politics and audience participation for nearly 50 years. Long before today’s innovations in social media, Fass utilized the airwaves for mobilization encouraging luminaries and ordinary listeners to talk openly, taking the program in surprising directions. RADIO UNNAMEABLE is a visual and aural collage that pulls from Bob Fass’ immense archive of audio, film, photographs, and video that has been sitting dormant until now.

On his “Radio Unnameable” show on WBAI, Fass played host to — or was a crucial part of — some 40 years of liberal causes, as well as musical and political legends. Through his eyes (and his loyal listeners’ ears), directors Jessica Wolfson and Paul Lovelace traverse the evolution of a community, the unifying world of New York at night and the crucial vibrancy of what some may dismiss as “old media.”
A treasure trove of both visual and aural footage makes this terrific doc a keeper. Its affectionate appreciation of one man’s long, strange trip through history make it a helluva lot of fun.

I’ve been waiting for this film for a long time. I’ve been fan of Paul’s for some time now. his doc about the Holy Model Rounders was wonderful and quite memorable. I was here in KC back in the late 60s when KCJC played earliest unknown Pink Floyd in the middle of the night i’d wake up and wonder @ the strange new free form radio that mixed Gene Autry cowboy music segued into Phil Oaks into Iron Butterfly along with local groups, Mystic Number National Bank and the “jocks” would be right there (sometimes engaging in light commerce) freaking out @ the Place in Westport (now Westport Flea) I’ll be there- won’t miss it.
