Kansas City, Missouri – KKFI 90.1 FM, a community radio station with a 70-mile broadcast range based in Kansas City, is building a new website, which will be launched in the next two months. In a continuing effort to improve its service to its listening audience, the new site promises to be a “second radio signal” because many of its radio shows will be transformed into podcasts for listening from mobile devices and computers. The site will also feature a bold, new look with more information about radio shows.

KKFI’s listeners requested and the station promises to deliver podcasts, a way to listen to news and public affairs shows from a computer or mobile device.

Demonstrating its dedication to volunteer contributions, KKFI selected WordPress, an open-source, community-developed web platform. WordPress will allow the station to build a site with web applications donated by the web developer community. This reflects the spirit and values of KKFI.

Under the direction of Kansas City-based web developer, Fox Web Creations, KKFI will unveil a stunning new look to the website. The new site will feature plenty of photographs and illustrations from volunteer community artists and photographers.

The new site will also provide program notes on special programming, and provide individual producers with the tools to write about weekly show episodes directly on the website.

KKFI is a non-profit organization, which relies heavily on volunteers. Each of the 70 radio host or DJ is a volunteer. To demonstrate its dedication to volunteer support, the station selected the crowd-sourcing Volunteer Match website (volunteermatch.org) as a recruiting partner. Volunteer Match allows KKFI to recruit talented individuals from a large pool of volunteers to write, take photos and create illustrations for the website.

KKFI, a community radio station on-air for 24 years, produces public affairs and music shows, as well as airs nationally-syndicated shows and news shorts. The station’s eclectic music programming includes blues, jazz, reggae, Persian, folk, rock, hip hop, alternative, Hispanic, women’s and world music.  KKFI’s local and national public affairs programming includes shows dealing with working class, peace, environment, social justice, LGBT, and alternative health issues.  KKFI is a Pacifica Radio affiliate and airs award-winning programs such as Democracy Now, as well as other syndicated shows.
