Kansas Appleseed – Working To Make A More Just Kansas

Kansas Appleseed is a nonprofit, nonpartisan justice center dedicated to vulnerable and excluded Kansans. Through collaborations with pro bono attorneys and community partners, we investigate social, economic, and political injustice in Kansas and advocate for systemic solutions. We serve as a voice for the public at large and for individuals and groups who are without effective legal representation. The Kansas Appleseed board comprises leading Kansas attorneys who volunteer their expertise to improve the fair administration of justice. They are part of the Appleseed Network, a partnership of seventeen independent justice centers in the U.S. and Mexico working to defeat poverty and injustice.

Today Host Craig Lubow talks with Benet Magnusson, Executive Director of Kansas Appleseed. Benet is a native of Lawrence, Kansas. His career has been dedicated to nonprofit advocacy on behalf of impoverished and excluded communities.

It’s Women’s Equality Week on the Heartland Labor Forum. We’ll interview two Pioneer Working Women. First, Janet Smith organized and became President of the Faculty Union at University of Illinois Chicago. When the administration split the non-tenured and tenured faculty in two, she insisted on bargaining together.  Second, Jacki Chadwick drives a cement truck the size of a dinosaur. She’s a Teamster and says she and the guys work as a team delivering the cement. Tune in Thursday at 6pm, rebroadcast Friday at 5am.
