2017 BBC Folk Award Nominees

Our April 2017 fROOTS magazine has arrived and with it the ballot list of nominees for this year’s BBC Folk Awards! Want to guess what you’ll be hearing on today’s Foolkiller Folk? That’s right – most of this very same shortlist ? (It would have been ALL of this year’s nominees, but we ran out of time ).

Oh – you want to know who was nominated for what? OK, then:

  • In the category of Folk Singer of the Year, we’ll be bringing you Daoiri Farrell, Jim Causley, Kris Derever and Shirley Collins
  • For Best Group you’ll hear 9Bach, Brebach, The Furrow Collective, and The Gloaming
  • In Best Duo we have three of four: Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker, Megson, and O’Hooley & Tidow
  • The Horizon Award (the best emerging artist or artists on the folk scene during the Awards year) shortlist comprises: Daoira Farrell (again), Fara, Ninebarow, and Talisk
  • The Best Original track shortlist is: Nancy Kerr, Kris Drever, Martin Green (featuring Adam Holmes), and Jim Moray
  • For Best Traditional track we again have three of four: Songs of Separation, Daoiri Farrell (we’ll be surprised if Daoiri doesn’t take at least one award), and Julie Murphy
  • Same in the Best Album category: Jim Moray, Martin Green, Shirley Colling, and Songs of Separation
  • Fortunately there’s a lot of category overlap, but we still ran out of time before we got to the Young Folk Award or Musician of the Year.

Enjoy!
