Just What Is Elder Abuse? and Momma On A Mission – Walk A Mile In Her Shoes.

Just What Is Elder Abuse? Who Can You Call?

As the Baby Boomers get older, Elder Abuse, the physical, financial and emotional exploitation of old people is on the rise. Sometimes the very mechanisms developed to protect older Americans and make it easier for family and friends to care for them are used to exploit and extort them. The MO Department of Health & Senior Services and the Mid-America Regional Council’s Department of Aging Services are two agencies that work to help elders regain control of their lives.

Host Melvin Merritt talks with Michelle Brown of the Mid-America Regional Council’s Department of Aging Services about managing the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, which advocates for Long-Term Care residents throughout Cass, Clay, Jackson, Platte and Ray Counties. She has also just been appointed secretary for the National Consumer Voice’s Leadership Council on Nursing Home Reform. She will also give information about the assistance program at MARC, known as KC-Connect SENIORS, the in-home services program, the Silver Haired Legislature Delegation, and the National Family Caregiver Support Program.
