Sara Morgan + Sarah Potenza – a Tale of Two Sara(h)s

Sara Morgan and Sarah Potenza’s paths keep crossing. Nearly three years ago, Diana Linn was the first radio dj to play tunes like “Never Been to Nashville” from Arkansan, now hometown girl Sara Morgan.  Nearly five years ago she was blown away by Rhode Island Native Sarah Potenza when she played one of her first gigs at Knuckleheads with The Tall Boys.  Much water has passed under the proverbial bridge since those serendipitous beginnings.  Sara Morgan opens for Sarah Potenza October 19 at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City.

Recognized by local music critics as Kansas City’s Best Newcomer of the year, Sara Morgan recently had the honor of performing for thousands of students at the 2016 Missouri FFA state convention at the University of Missouri.  Sara has opened for country hit-makers LoCash, chart topping country singer Chase Bryant, Grammy winning singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell, Grammy and Dove award winner BJ Thomas, country superstar John Michael Montgomery, singer-songwriter Michael Martin Murphey,  Radney Foster, Craig Wayne Boyd, Sex and the City heart throb John Corbett, alternative folk singer/songwriter Sean Rowe, Lawrence, KS native Chuck Mead of the famed 90’s alternative country band BR549, and singer/songwriter Ben Taylor. She was also the preshow act at the Industry Bar inside the Uptown Theater in Kansas City before her idol, Loretta Lynn, took the main stage in November 2014.  Her dream of being able to spend a quality moment with the Queen of Country came to fruition when Ms. Lynn hosted Sara on her tour bus after Sara’s set and prior to Ms. Lynn’s performance.  The experience was magical.

After Potenza’s spellbinding blind audition yielded a four-chair turn on NBC’s The Voice, a visibly moved Pharrell Williams told her she was “giving this generation something they’ve never seen before.” Potenza is to the blues what Adele is to pop: a colossal-voiced singer who merges her old-school influences with a modernistic sound. Her new album,Monster, solidifies endless Janis Joplin vocal comparisons but also colors between the lines of Memphis blues, Nashville Americana, New Orleans funk and L.A. punk. Its lyrics are personal and personally therapeutic, as she empowers herself through tunes denouncing industry naysayers and embracing her fuller-figured, boisterous self.
