Hunger-Relief Organization Rescues Produce from Area Fields

Lisa Ousley, Executive Director of After the Harvest, a hunger-relief organization, is a guest on the program to let us know about their autumn efforts to glean food from farms and get them into pantries.

Lisa talks about how they have rescued produce and fruit from area fields and orchards. They coordinate volunteers to pick bags and boxes to deliver to area pantries, and they also contract with farmers to deliver full truckloads to Harvesters for repacking. One truckload can include 44,000 pounds of produce, for example, a delivery of sweet potatoes.

After the Harvest also invites radio listeners to attend their “Harvest Happy Hour” — a time to celebrate the fall harvest with your friends and colleagues — on Thursday, October 23 from 5:00-6:30 pm. There’s no cost to the event that provides beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as a wonderful selection of appetizers, but it’s a fundraiser for the organization so attendees will be invited to make a donation. Party for a cause!
