Sprouts Radio from the Grassroots is a 30-minute weekly program featuring radio programs produced at community radio stations or by other independent producers from across the country and sometimes around the world.
Over two extraordinary days on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., we met Trump voters, and anti-Trump protesters, who had come in from far and wide for the inauguration and the Women’s March that followed it. Despite some clashes, most exercised their democratic rights in good faith. But America’s stark divisions were nonetheless on display.
We start at the inauguration on Friday, where the Naked Cowboy strummed guitar and Trump supporters from across the world came to see him assume the presidency. We move to protests outside the inauguration zone, which turned contentious and then violent, and then on to the enormous Women’s March which flooded the Mall on Saturday. Liz Scherffius caught up with women and girls marching for their rights, while Kamila Kudelska followed Polish domestic workers who travelled to D.C. from Chicago to demonstrate. And Tori Elliott spoke to vendors about the business drummed up by the inauguration.
