Producer/Host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes artist/poet Hugh Merrill, artist Teresa Dirks, gallery director Vanessa Lacy, and Johnson County Youth Services Librarian Abbey Ludlow and teen editor Amanda Pendley to the program.

HUGH MERRILL -Dog Alley is a full color book of poems and drawings by the internationally renowned artist and educator Hugh Merrill. The poems are an intimate look at memory, aging, loss, privilege and sexuality all wrapped up in the potent and visceral language of emotion that only Merrill can achieve. These poems are the journey Merrill traversed over the past two years sailing on the river of his memory and imagination. Dog Alley by Hugh Merrill Edited/designed by Jeanette Powers and published by Stubborn Mule Press.

The book release party will be held at the Kansas City Artist Coalition in conjunction with the KCAC annual auction February 7, 2019, 6:00 PM. Merrill’s books of poetry will be for sale with funds going to KCAC.

TERESA DIRKS & VANESSA LACY- “Capturing Bliss” is a juried group art exhibition at the Vanessa Lacy Gallery, curated by artist Teresa Dirks. Opening Reception is February 8th from 5-9pm, and the show will run from 2/8/19- 3/2/19.
The theme of the show is “Capturing Bliss”. We hope to find and display artwork about finding bliss in the now and living life to the fullest. Art that gives off the most blissful of vibes will be accepted into the show. We believe one major role for art is to fill homes and public places with inspiration, color, and joy. AMANDA PENDLEY & ABBEY LUDLOW-The Library is pleased to announce renown author Jacqueline Woodson will be honored at the elementia release celebration on April 26, 2019 at the Central Resource Library, 9875 W 87th St., Overland Park, KS, 66212. Woodson is this year’s National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. The ambassadorship is jointly sponsored by the Children’s Book Council, Every Child a Reader, and the US Library of Congress.
Representatives from the elementia project will appear on Kansas City’s Community Radio, KKFI 90.1’s popular ARTSPEAK radio program hosted by artist and civic leader Maria Vasquez Boyd. Speakers included
– Teen Editor Amanda Pendley, a 19-year-old writer from Kansas City. Ms. Pendley is participating in her 3rd and final round on the editorial committee. She admires elementia for “the safe space it has created for young authors and artists to share their work.”
– JCL Youth Services Librarian Abbey Ludlow. She has been active in libraries for more than ten years. In addition to her work in Youth Services at Shawnee and Cedar Roe Libraries she is passionate about teen services and giving teens a place and a voice of their own. Some details about this season:
– A team of 14 editors and designers will be hard at work selecting what goes into the magazine and designing the next issue;
– Save the date for Friday, April 26 6-8pm for the issue xvi reception featuring author, National Book Award winner and National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature Jacqueline Woodson;
– Copies of volume xvi will be available at the event on Friday, April 26 and at all JCL library locations and online the following day, and like all Library services are offered at no charge; About Johnson County Library Through its 14 libraries County-wide and the online eLibrary, the mission of Johnson County Library is to provide access to ideas, information, experiences and materials that support and enrich people’s lives.
