The Kansas City Museum is one of ten partner organizations in the United States to participate in “Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues,” a multiyear community collecting initiative launched by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.
This collecting initiative will document stories from the United States and Puerto Rico and identify artifacts that reflect the social and cultural influence of baseball on Latino communities. Objects could include baseball equipment, stadium signs, game memorabilia, food vendor signs, home movies, period photographs, and more. The goal of the collecting initiative is to work towards the development of a traveling exhibition centered on Latinos and baseball by 2020.

Kansas City’s local history and legacy are important to this national narrative. The Kansas City Museum will host collecting events on Friday, August 12 and Saturday, August 13 at the Kansas City Museum and Penn Valley Park to select local stories and materials donated or loaned to the collections of both the Kansas City Museum and the Smithsonian.

GIMME YOUR LUNCH MONEY: HEARTLAND POETS SPEAK OUT AGAINST BULLIES
Poets contributing to this anthology that includes two former Kansas Poet Laureates—will speak out against bullying, aloud. The poems range from illustrating bullying, not only during childhood and adolescence, but illustrate bullying in the workplace, in culture, in politics, in facing the -isms (sexism, racism, ageism, ableism, etc.), religion, marital status, military service status, animals, and, even in scientific labs for humanity’s “greater good.” And bullies can be diseases (such as cancer). And voices inside our heads may bully us, too. Some poems also display a bully’s point-of-view.
