ARTSPEAK RADIO chats with Kwanzaa Humphrey, Jen Harris, Dave Abadie, & JC Franco

In the first half, Maria talks with painter Kwanzaa Humphrey and poet Jen Harris. Later in the program, entrepreneur/designer Dave Abadie and JC Franco with Show and Tell join us live.

Kwanzaa Humphrey-Like many I began drawing at a very early age. It was a medium I could get lost in, with my imagination and thoughts. I believe good design starts on paper. In all that I create I first put pen to paper. I have over 10 years of experience in the design and art field. I started in print and quickly moved to web development. My first love is illustration. I have experience in just about all visual elements. I’ve created everything from logo’s, entire web sites spot and story illustration to. I’m currently employed as a multi-media flash developer where I work with a team to design web enabled instruction for a fortune 50 company. I specialize in lead interface design and usability. My position also offers me the opportunity to be on camera and the occasional voice over. I’m really looking forward to having my painting “Three Queens” in the KCAC 40th Anniversary River Market Regional Invitational Exhibition. The exhibition will be at the Artists Coalition’s Mallin and Charno Galleries, August 12 – September 22. 201 Wyandotte Kansas City, Missouri 64105 August 12 Opening Reception. 5-8 p.m. As part of the KCAC 40 Anniversary Block Party!#kcartistlifestyle #kcacartistlifestyle #RMRE2016 #kwanza #painting

Entrepreneur/designer Dave Abadie discusses how to turn your bicycle into a motorized bike. “I’ve been building electric bikes as a hobby for around 4 years. My interest was initially sparked by a You tube video I saw of a homemade electric car. I thought that would be a really fun project, but as I started to look at the costs and complexity of a car conversion, I quickly scaled back and decided to try a bike first. My first build was a encouraging success and I soon wanted to build another one. Since then, I’ve built two more bikes. I forgot all about doing a car conversion and now focus solely on making electric bikes. This year, I’ve decided to turn my hobby into a business. I’ve opened up my workshop and am accepting projects from people who are interested in converting their bike to electric, but might not want to do the conversion themselves. I will help them pick out parts and do the installation and testing.”

Show and Tell has two definitions.
1. An exhibition on September 2nd showcasing projects and concepts distilled by a number of collaborators working together that redefines their own disciplines within the context of the West Bottoms.
2. An on-going project that will set a foundation for collaboration among multiple disciplines for current and future projects within multiple contexts.
First and foremost it is an exhibition of ideas and creativity focused at the West Bottoms. We’ve taken the past year to gather a bunch of research and documentation on the history and current state of the West bottoms and earlier this year we started sharing this with a bunch of different people. We’re trying to gather as many different perspectives as possible in an effort to generate a lot of different ideas and art about the West Bottoms.
