ARTSPEAK RADIO with Chris Dahlquist, ArtsKC, & Kiosk Gallery

Host/producer Maria Vasquez Boyd talks with artist Chris Dahlquist, ArtsKC Director of Development Alison Patterson & Director of Marketing and Communication Susan Franke, also Eric & Erin Dodson who own an artist-run gallery space Kiosk Gallery.

Chris Dahlquist learned to use a camera and darkroom as she was learning to ride a bicycle and write in cursive. Originally from Fort Worth, she wrote her first artist statement on a Big Chief tablet in phonetic Texan, claiming for herself a life of travel and “tacking pitchers”. She has held a camera in her hands ever since.
Dahlquist’s Gillis Art Lab-If you are near downtown KCMO stop by 3rd Friday in Columbus Park to get a sneak peek at the most ambitious public installation I have ever undertaken! I will be installing it soon in Denver but before it goes, I really want to share it with you, my Kansas City people. So come on by my studio and see the first of the finished pieces, get a glimpse of the process, and see it in the context of my previous work.

OUR MESSAGE- We Promote, Support and Advocate for the arts.
We are a nonprofit organization serving the five-county region- Clay, Platte and Jackson in Missouri; Johnson and Wyandotte in Kansas.

Some of our most well-known programs include the ArtsKC Fund, Kansas City’s united arts fund, and Now Showing, a program matching local artists looking to show their work in corporate spaces..However, our programs and services are not limited to just these core initiatives! ArtsKC aims to connect individuals to their arts community by providing detailed information in our online Resource Center. In addition, we work with local government and civic leadership to advocate for the arts. To get started, we recommend viewing our video or visiting us in person by attending First Friday.

Kiosk Gallery is an artist-run gallery space started by husband and wife team Eric & Erin Dodson in Kansas City, MO. Our mission is to bring the work of emerging artists to the public, and to provide a space for artists to grow their ideas and elevate the presentation of their work. We are both visual artists, and we are making and showing our own work as well. We aim for inclusiveness and transparency in art and gallery activities – to help educate the young artists we work with, and to encourage participation and the building of community. As a nod to our compact space, we often focus on work that relates in some way conceptually to themes of smallness, humility, or succinctness.
Currently the Kiosk Gallery is showing a solo exhibition by St. Louis artist Tracey Haynes.
“In life the only constant is change and the movement of energy. I explore these ideas in photograms, or camera-less photographs, using ink, natural materials, and other media to create mostly impermanent negatives that deteriorate quickly. The images are printed in the traditional black and white darkroom, and then scanned to make archival limited edition digital prints.

“My intentions are to seek beauty and mindfulness. While inspiring interpretation by some, as if they are Rorschach tests, my images are meant as statements of movement, line, shape, and the shift from light to shadow. They each are a momentary experience. I offer my work as a possible resting place in our continually—and radically—changing world.”

Bio: Tracey Haynes is an artist, poet, and teacher. Her work concentrates on beauty, the ephemeral, and the challenge of food security in the face of global warming. Having started her career in photojournalism, and later moving into editorial and commercial photography, she is now drawn to making camera-less photographs and painting in oil. She earned a Bachelor’s of Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a Master of Arts in Teaching–English from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville. She lives in St. Louis, Missouri, and soon will be teaching cooking to eighth graders.

Kiosk Gallery is located at 916 E 5th Street, Kansas City, MO. We’re in the Columbus Park neighborhood, near 5th and Harrison.
Show runs through August 10th.
Open Fridays 12-6 pm,
Saturdays 12-4 pm
& by appointment.
