ARTSPEAK RADIO host/producer Maria Vasquez Boyd talks with singer/songwriter Elain McMilian, KC Conjure Shop owner Julie Valdivia, and multi-discipline artist Mark Allen.

Elaine McMilian is a vocalist and writer from Independence, Missouri. She sang her first solo at age 5 and continues to perform a variety of musical genres as a solo artist and in various groups. She self-produced two albums of original songs, “Insomnia,” and “The Messenger.” McMilian received a BA in English-Creative Writing from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She writes essays and poems, which can be found on her blog, Along the Way, and is working on a memoir.

Mark Allen -SOLANOIR is a collection of events hosted in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City in preparation for the Great American Solar Eclipse cutting across on August 21st. Mural artists will be traveling from around the country and the world to transform the Crossroads into the Next Great American Art Hub. The week and weekend leading up to the Eclipse, we are celebrating this truly incredible Arts District and really putting it on the map as an art-rich destination with a strong street art presence. In a week’s time, we hope to transform the facade of the Crossroads Arts District and focus our collective cultural identity.

FACES // Mark Allen + Kat Moss

Mark Allen and Kat Moss present “FACES,” and exhibition of original paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, and film.
This will be Kat Moss’s first exhibition of her art, which features contour and blind contour portraits of friends, self-portraits, and photographs through the lens of a model, actress, and artist. She is inspired by Jenny Holzer for her feminism, poetry, and aesthetics.
Mark Allen will present his latest work from 2017, featuring large scale paintings, underwater photographs, portraits, and other art from his personal vault. Much of his recent work from the past few years has featured Kat Moss, as his muse and creative collaborator.
A scene from their debut short film , “Alice Through the Shattered Glass” featuring Kat Moss and co-directed by Morgan Cooper (Cooper Films) and Mark Allen will also be on display.

On Friday August 18th, The Gown Gallery will open their doors to their newly renovated 7 East Event space for an Intergalactic Fashion Exhibition of Design and Photography.
Curated by Garment Manufacturer Laura Treas, 12 fashion designers will present their original garments, jewelry, and accessories in a live model exhibition open to the public. Underwater photographs by Mark Allen will also be on display.

This unprecedented event is a unique twist on a fashion show, ditching the runway for a more up-close-and-personal viewing experience. Wine and special plates by Affäire will also be available in their ivy-shaded courtyard.
Mural artists will also be live-painting the East-facing exterior wall during the event, commissioned by Botwin Commercial Development. A live musical performance will accompany the artist and viewers to cap off the evening.
