Emery Uhlig-LitUp was started by Emery Uhlig, a 15-year-old student at Shawnee Mission East in Prairie Village, Kansas. An avid reader, Emery thought that there should be a book festival specifically designed for teenagers and young adults, and she has enlisted a broad community of readers, authors and organizations to make LitUp a reality. With the help of her founding partner, the Mid-Continent Public Library, and the generous support of sponsors, nationally known authors and illustrators, and even the Librarian of Congress, Dr. Carla Hayden LitUp plans to expand to other states and countries in 2019. If you would like to help organize a LitUp festival for your city, please visit litkit.org, and we’ll send you more information.

You may have heard that this May, Mid-Continent Public Library will be hosting its first ever teen arts and literature festival called LitUp. The daylong festival is the brainchild of 15-year-old Shawnee Mission East student Emery Uhlig, daughter of author Candice Millard. In conjunction with the Library, Emery has organized a day filled with presentations by nationally renowned authors and illustrators on May 12 at MCPL’s North Independence Branch.
LitUp will also include recognition of young artists and writers who have submitted their works for consideration into the LitUp Creative Contest. From now until March 31, teens can submit entries into four different categories: Short Fiction, Poetry, Visual Art, and Nonfiction Essay. The top submissions in each category will be featured in the 2018 LitUp Creative Contest Anthology. Find additional information about the contest, including guidelines and instructions on how to submit works, online.
