ARTSPEAK RADIO host & producer Maria Vasquez Boyd talks with Bruce Hartman & Karen Gerety Folk with the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, GDD Boombox creator Gus Davis & Paul McDaniel, and writer/performer Joel Barrett.

Executive Director Bruce Hartman and Curator of Education Karen Gerety Folk represent the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kansas. Bruce was director of the JCCC Gallery of Art from its inception in 1990. Bruce is the Nerman Museum’s chief curator and oversees exhibition organization and manages and develops the college’s permanent art collection.

Public Art Review magazine named JCCC as one of the top 10 college campuses for public art in America, citing the artwork installed throughout the campus. The Nerman Museum has one of the top internationally acclaimed collections of emerging and established artists today, and we present many of the region’s most important exhibitions of leading-edge contemporary art. Admission is always free. This year we are celebrating our 10th anniversary!

Karen joined the Nerman Museum staff eleven years ago when the Nerman Museum was under construction. She develops dynamic educational resources for JCCC academic use and the broader community, including youth, families and lifelong learners. Through various educational programs and materials, individuals of all ages and backgrounds may explore contemporary art, develop critical thinking skills and expand visual literacy at the Nerman Museum.

Joel Barrett is an LGBTQ writer, speaker and mentor. I am a survivor of ex-gay therapy. Some call it conversion therapy, repairative therapy or just plan counseling, but the goals are the same: To eliminate or reduce homosexual desires and actions. Needless to say, it didn’t work.
I am a recovering fundamental Baptist. If you don’t know what a fundamental Baptist is, I can explain: We thought the Southern Baptists were liberal.
I was a Baptist pastor married to a woman living the midwest raising our three children. Yes, I spent over 15 years in ministry before exiting that line of work to focus completely on becoming fixing myself so I could save my marriage and live as a straight man. I always knew I was gay, but being gay wasn’t an option in the world I lived in so I kept trying to make it go away through church, prayer, scripture, and the pursuit of godliness because everyone told me that being gay was a sin and probably just about the worst sin anyone could commit.

Today I am happily married to my husband of over a decade. I share my colorful story with audiences everywhere to encourage them to live each day as their authentic, powerful and beautiful self.
