Maria Ogedengbe-GOURDen Party
Saturday, September 10th artist Maria Ogedengbe and friends will host a garden party by the gourd trellis at Longfellow Farm, a community garden on the northwest corner of 30th & Harrison in Kansas City, from 9-11am or so.

The artist constructed the nine foot high, three-panel gourd trellis at Longfellow Farm from garden timbers, bamboo, and green tree boughs bent into designs. Foot-high gourd plants were beginning to flourish in time for the Cultivate KC urban garden tour in June, and now, a couple of months later, the trellis is entirely covered with flowery vines bearing fruit.

The garden party will begin with a welcome from the farm, and then Maria Ogedengbe and fellow gardener, June Burnes, will speak about Missouri GOURDen, a larger garden project for 2017, as well as best practices for growing gourds.

The morning gathering will include a lesson on how to make a shekere instrument from a gourd, gourd garden companion plants & bugs ID, paging through the garden daybook, and viewing plans for next year’s Missouri GOURDen project. Light refreshments will be served under Kampala Canopy, a hand dyed-tent created by the artist in Africa.

Maria says, “Many people love the idea of a picturesque, flowering gourd trellis and others know gourds are a blank canvas ready for crafting things like shekeres or birdhouses. In addition to hearing news of the community gourd bower planned for next year, guests will learn something about growing gourds including how to prepare the ground before winter, starting seedlings, companion planting, and how to hand pollinate for a larger crop.” She also mentions that seeds folded into a page of gourd gardening tips will be given as favors.

The artist invites all to participate in gardening, crafts, and music at the ArtsKC-funded Missouri GOURDen project during the growing season next year. A search for the best site for the 14-foot wide 2017 gourd bower is currently underway.

The GOURDEN Party will take place at Longfellow Farm on northwest corner of 30th and Harrison in Kansas City Missouri, and parking is available on the street.

Attendance is limited to the first 100 places reserved – reply at http://bit.ly/2cd333B or to [email protected] or (347) 687-5247 by noon on Friday, September 9th.
