Ban The Box and The EEOC; and Sharon Snyder, Doing The Right Thing Will Get You Fired

Ban The Box and The EEOC

Many of our listeners know about the local Ban the Box efforts. KCMO, KCKS, and the state of Missouri have some kind of law or ordinance that requires removing the “have you ever been convicted of a felony” box on employment applications for government jobs. Today we learn about the Federal laws and how the EEOC enforces them.

Host Nancy Leazer talks with Teresa Wilke an EEOC investigator about helping those who feel they have been discriminated against for their past. It is not as clear cut as one might imagine and navigating the system takes some help.

Sharon Snyder worked at the Jackson County Courthouse for 34 years and is now out of a job for doing the right thing..

*We were unable to get our scheduled guest, journalist Greg Gagne on the phone so we replayed the interview below.

20-year-old Robert Nelson was convicted in 1984 of rape and sentenced to 50 years behind bars, today at the age of 49 he is a free man. It was the undying efforts of his sister, Sea Dunnell who continued to fight even after Judge David Byrn had denied Robert’s request for a DNA test to prove his innocence. It was the actions of Sharon Snyder, a judicial administrative assistant with 30 years of experience when she gave Sea the information needed to properly file the DNA motion Robert needed.

Robert did file a proper motion for the DNA test, eventually winning his freedom and Judge Byrn fired Sharon Snyder for breaking rules of the court. Today Host Keith Brown El talks with Sharon Snyder about what she did that got her fired and why she risked her job for someone she had never met.

Jaws of Justice Radio and KKFI want to send their condolences to the Family and Friends of John E Burris. John passed away this past week and is interred at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. John was proud of his service as a US Marine and spent much of his life working to improve the lives of those living in his NE Wyandotte County community. His family was large and extended beyond blood relations to many in need of a loving family.
John’s involvement with KKFI included the Heartland Labor Forum and Jaws of Justice Radio. He also was a member of Veterans for Peace and would show up on the line with many local groups working for Peace and Justice. We are all diminished by the loss of his wisdom, his demand for honesty and the truth as well as that big smile that he would share even in the face of adversity. Rest in peace my friend, you taught a whole host of us how to carry on the fight.
