Climate Change Affects Indigenous Alaskans

This week Sprouts showcases a weekly program that is new called Encounters: Radio Experiences in the North. The program has been on the air in Alaska for five years but makes its national debut this month. Journalist, Elizabeth Arnold goes to Kivalina Alaska to meet with indigenous people who are some of the country’s smallest carbon contributors. Originally they were hunters who traveled seasonally but were forced by the government to settle in a town on an narrow Alaskan Island. The townspeople explain and describe how they are some of the people first and most dramatically impacted by global climate change. Their town is now literally being washed away by coastal erosion as the sea rises – and with it what’s left of their way of life. Guests: Seasoned journalist Elizabeth Arnold interviews residents of Kivalina, Alaska Credits: Produced by: Lisa Busch, KCAW, Sitka, Alaska Encounters: Radio Experiences in the North
