Conviction Integrity Units – Will It Pass In The MO Legislature?

The new show, Conviction on ABC has brought the idea of a Conviction Integrity Unit to a much wider segment of our population than any debate in a state legislature ever has. The evidence of a system corrupted by prosecutorial misconduct, mistaken eye witness IDs, and improved DNA testing has led to a growing number of men and women that have been released from prison after it was proven the were wrongly convicted. While on TV it only takes a matter of a week and the wrongly convicted person is immediately released the reality is that the process of proving a convicted person innocent takes decades and their release is not immediate and may takes months or years to secure.

Host Latahra Smith of the KC Freedom Project talks with Representative Brandon Ellington about the Conviction Integrity Unit bill he is introducing in the next MO Legislative Session. If all goes well they will be joined on the phone by Ricky Kidd whose fight to prove his innocence after 20 years in prison has recently been featured on KSHB Channel 41 News and the front page of The Call newspaper here in Kansas City. They will also open the phone lines for your questions, personal stories and comments.
