This week on From the Vault  we celebrate the life of WBAI radio host Marian McPartland, who hosted a jazz program called A Delicate Balance for fourteen years on WBAI, starting in 1964. Mixing music recordings with interviews, her work at Pacifica would earn her accolades and respect from the jazz community and beyond, and pave the way for a long and successful career at NPR after her departure from Pacifica in 1978. On September 5, 2013, WBAI’s Janet Coleman, along with colleagues Michael G. Haskins and James Irsay, and award-winning composer David Amram, paid tribute to McPartland with a special broadcast, using selections from a December 20, 1974 recording held by the Pacifica Radio Archives.
