A Drone Specialist Speaks Out

Cian Westmoreland, a former member of the US Air Force, helped build the communications infrastructure for the drone program in Afghanistan. He has signed an open letter to President Obama proclaiming that US drone attacks, which have killed thousands of civilians, have served as recruitment tools for ISIS and other terrorist groups rather than curtailing wars.

PeaceWorks-KC is cosponsoring a speaking tour by Westmoreland, including Kansas City.

Date: Wednesday, Nov. 16

Time: 7 pm

Place: All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 4501 Walnut St., Kansas City, Mo.

Concerning Air Force drone communications, Westmoreland says, “No comms, no bombs.” In 2009, he was offered a $50,000 bonus to re-enlist, but he turned it down. During the past year, even though he is dealing with PTSD, he has given talks around the world urging an end to US belligerence.

Ann Suellentrop, MSRN, a member of the PeaceWorks-KC Board of Directors and leader in Physicians for Social Responsibility-KC, has heard Westmoreland and other drone war experts speak out against the use of drone warfare. Suellentrop says, “Stepping forward as a whistleblower has been very difficult for those who’ve dared to do it, and morally imperative.”

Westmoreland’s Missouri speaking tour is cosponsored by PeaceWorks-KC, University of Missouri Peace Studies, Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation, Veterans for Peace, William Woods University Legal Studies Program, and Mid-Missouri PeaceWorks.
