Early Country

Mark grew up in Oklahoma in the 1950s where what you got on the radio was Top 40 and country. So Mark – being a fan of classical and folk – hightailed it out of there ASAP and never looked back.

But Mark recently had a birthday – a big one, divisible by 11 – which got him thinking about his musical history, and he decided it was time to exorcise his lack of appreciation of the Oklahoma music of his youth.

Today’s show is the first step. Having found his way back to country through gospel, bluegrass, and Hank Williams (the rest is a mystery), we will be bringing you what Mark thinks are the best of the country music releases, 1950 – 1954. And there are 39 of them for you. You’ll be hearing Red Foley, Lefty Frizell, Hank Williams, Stuart Hamblen, Moon Mullican, Skeets McDonad, Bill Monroe and His Blue Grass Boys, Floyd Tillman, Stanley Brothers, Flatt & Scruggs, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Big Jeff, Zeb Turner, Martha Carson, Jimmy Murphy, Del Wood, Hank Thompson, Kitty Wells, Eddy Arnold, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dickens, Slim Whitman, Slim Willet & the Brush Cut, Hank Snow, Tommy Duncan, Joe & Rose Lee Maphis, Webb Pierce, Ray Price, Little Jimmy dickens, Ernest Tubb, Elvis Presley, Scott & Bill, and Wilma Lee and Stoney Cooper.
