Education series guests Tricia Johnson, Show Me KC Schools and Phyllis A. Chase, Ed.D., UMKC Charter Schools Center, discuss education, student achievement and education options

Trica Johnson, founder and Executive Director of Show Me KC Schools and Dr. Phyllis A. Chase, Ed.D., Director, UMKC Charter Schools Center, discuss education, student achievement and education options as a part of Urban Connections series of programming on education.

Host and producer, Donna Morrow Wolfe, Co-host and co-producer, Joseph Jackson.

Tricia Johnson, originally from Southern California, has taught middle school in Chicago and internationally. She earned her MA from Teachers College, Columbia University, and worked in Indonesia in support of post-tsunami development before moving to Kansas City in 2009. In seeking out a school for their two children, Tricia realized that many KC parents were struggling to find answers to their school-related questions and ended up moving from the city. Tricia founded Show Me KC Schools to help parents find the right information and the right school for their child, right here in Kansas City. When not reading school handbooks, Tricia enjoys joging on local KC trails, rousing games of UNO with her children, and discovering Kansas City’s many great neighborhoods.

UMKC Charter School Center
In support of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Education’s mission “to create lifelong opportunities through education for America’s diverse urban communities,” the UMKC Charter School Center’s (UMKC CSC) mission is to empower urban youths to attain their full potential, thus resulting in a city, state, and nation that can compete in a global economy.

This is being accomplished by focusing on the following:

Development of high-quality urban schools that will retain and attract families with school-age children within the Kansas City Missouri School District;
Accountability for student achievement that will result in the UMKC charter schools closing the achievement gap with the state of Missouri regardless of economic standing, race, and students with special needs, in exchange for greater autonomy;
Sponsoring charter schools that have safe and orderly climates, high attendance, increased parent involvement, and effective governance practices, including fiscal responsibility and legal compliance; and
Providing schools of choice for parents and students that could encourage more effective practices and collaboration throughout the Kansas City Missouri School District.
