Endless Exploitation

In addition to providing unwaged work of birthing and care, women are the vast majority of trafficked persons in modern slavery and they are clustered in the lowest-waged employment on the planet. Five activists address these issues in international perspective.

Anuradha Koirala is a Nepalese social activist and the founder and director of Maiti Nepal  a non-profit that rescues thousands of Nepalese women who have been trafficked for sex around the world. Chanelle Gallant is a writer on sex and justice, a long-time activist in the sex workers rights movement and Spokesperson for Maggie’s: The Toronto Sex Workers Action Project, an organization run for and by local sex workers. Kalpona Akter of Nepal is a former child garment worker, now executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity. Deena Ladd is Co-founder and Coordinator of the Workers’ Action Centre, who uses popular education as a technique to advocate with workers; she now teaches at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. She was an organizer with the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (now called UNITE) and worked with retail, garment, social service, warehouse and manufacturing workers. Selma James is co-founder of the International Wages for Housework Campaign, and coordinator of the Global Women’s Strike; she co-authored the women’s movement classic The Power of Women and the Subversion of the Community.
