Faith Factor: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump

Hillary Clinton’s Methodist Roots

Although she doesn’t mention it much on the campaign trail, Hillary Clinton is a lifelong Methodist who has quietly turned to religion during her most trying times in the public eye. Growing up in suburban Chicago, she was inspired by a pastor who brought her youth group to hear Martin Luther King, Jr. speak. Later, in college, she subscribed to the Methodist magazine Motive. In fact, our guest suggests her religious convictions may explain her “conversion” from Republican to Democrat around that time.

Evangelists Lift Trump to Nomination

How much does Trump really know about his “favorite book,” the Bible? And how do conservative Christians feel about his praise of Planned Parenthood, or his three marriages? Our guest answers these questions and introduces us to a new voting base: Trumpvangelicals.  Read Sarah Posner’s article on “Trumpvangelicism.”

Faith in the Oval Office

Fifty percent of Americans say they would be skeptical of an atheist president. Perhaps this is why every American president has professed some kind of religious faith– at least in public. We look back on some of the spiritual struggles of our 44 presidents, from Abraham Lincoln’s conflict over slavery, to Harry Truman’s justification for using the atomic bomb. And we hear why voters want their president to be part Jesus Christ, part John Wayne.  Featuring Professors Darren Grinder and Steve Shaw, authors of The Presidents and Their Faith: From George Washington to Barack Obama.
