Fidel Castro in Harlem 1995

On this weeks From The Vault, we present Fidel Castro‘s 1995 address to the capacity 1300 people in attendance at the Abyssinian Church in Harlem. He was in New York to Address the United Nations’ 50th anniversary General Assembly.

On Sunday morning October 22nd, 1995, Fidel Castro was invited to address the General Assembly at the United Nations. Castro wore a nice suit instead of his usual military fatigues, and he kept his address to 6 minutes.

In the evening he would arrive at the Abyssinian Church in Harlem to address the capacity crowd of 1300 people crammed shoulder to shoulder to hear this revolutionary leader speak.

But before we play this speech we would like to share a short excerpt from Castro’s first address to the United Nations from 1960. Here Castro outlines the living conditions for most Cubans under the previous Batista dictatorship in Cuba.
