Geometry and Indian classical and western music with Professor Purna Bangere!

Violinist and KU professor of mathematics, Purna Bangere joins us to discuss Indian music and its relationship with geometry!

Professor Bangere will introduce Indian classical music, play some of his most recent and never before heard recordings and conclude with his collaborative project of Indian classical and Western music.

The collaborative musical project is with David Balakrishnan, the multi Grammy award winning director of the Turtle Island String Quartet brings us back to mathematics in a musical journey. The theoretical foundation for this collaboration comes from geometry and how a subject called algebraic geometry plays a crucial role in this new music that integrates Indian classical and Western music.

We will hear a recording illustrating a precursor to my work with David Balakrishnan which features Purna Bangere on violin, (KKFI’s own) Jeff Harshbarger on Bass and Amit Kavthekar on Tabla.
