This week on From the Vault we present a rare 1961 interview with Glenn Gould, one of the brilliant classical pianists of twentieth century.
Born in Toronto, Canada in 1932, Glenn Gould would live to just past his 50th birthday in 1982. From his first concert at age 17, his mastery of the piano entranced audiences; ultimately he would give just over 200 concerts in his lifetime, retiring from live performances in 1964. Gould would dedicate the remainder of his musical career in the recording studio, releasing over 50 records. Known for his vocalizations during performance, this genius quirk of Gould’s was the bane of both live concert audiences and studio engineers alike – yet readily ignored by all in the pure enjoyment of incredible piano interpretations of music’s greatest composers.
Gould’s conversation, featured in this episode, with a yet-to-be identified WBAI producer, showcases the pianist’s vast knowledge of the classical music masters, lesser-known masters, and contemporaries.
