Grandparents Raising Grandchildren; The CFPB And New Rules For Payday Lenders

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Denita Hoard is currently a student at UMKC along with other students have started a grandparents raising grandchildren support group. They began implementing and recruiting participants for this program last summer at Palestine Missionary Baptist church. The goal is to seek out grandparents who are raising their grandchildren with limited resources. Many of the families we have encountered thus far in this situation is typically informal, which is to say they have not gone through the legal system to terminate parental rights to be given full custody of the children. Although this arrangement seems to work well for the families, the grandparents are not allotted any additional income to offset the expenses they incur while raising the children. Often times they are raising these children on their social security income. Our goal is help these families by linking them to resources and support they may need, with the ultimate goal of being able to provide wrap around services.

They recently partnered with KC Healthy Kids and Palestine Missionary Baptist church to put on an event for these families. They have formed a group of grandparents who meet at Palestine Missionary Baptist church once a month to discuss various topics such as, dealing with self esteem, grief and loss, sex and drugs etc. Most of the grandparents have found it helpful to share their struggles with others who are in their same situation..

Host Nancy Leazer will talk with Denita Hoard, a student at UMKC and her mentor, Dr. Joan McDowd from UMKC about their efforts to form support groups for Grandparents that are raising their grandchildren.

The CFPB And New Rules For Payday Lenders

On Thursday, June 2nd The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced their proposed New rules to regulate the Pay Day Lending industry and other short term lenders. The CFPB made that announcement and started the comment period on the new rules here in Kansas City. Missouri has some of the loosest regulations on this industry and as a result hundreds of millions of dollars a year are drained out of our most vulnerable communities. Today we are going to play the announcement and reasons for those rules as laid out in a speech by Director Richard Cordray.
