immigration Panel: we the people; all the people (recorded live)

A panel discussion on the border crisis and the current immigration policy, and how the Supreme Court Justice opening and the current travel ban affect these issues. We will have experts in immigration, advocacy, psychology, and politics discussing the immigration process, the challenges immigrants face, how current policies affect our relationships with Muslim majority countries, the psychological effects of detention on individuals, how we can talk to our children about what’s happening, and how the upcoming election will affect immigration and the direction of the country for years to come.

The panel includes Kansas City Councilwoman Jolie Justus; Dr. Sofia Khan, founder and president of KC for Refugees; Alex Martinez, Safe and Welcome Field Organizer for ACLU Kansas and Director of the Kansas/Missouri Dream Alliance; Miguel M. Morales, award winning author and poet and a Latino Writers Collective board member; Tom Niermann, congressional candidate for Kansas’ third congressional district; Dr. Jeff Peterson, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and director of Kansas City Psychotherapy; Mahnaz Shabbir, president of Shabbir Advisors and past president of the Heartland Muslim Council and past board member of the Crescent Peace Society; and Rekha Sharma-Crawford who served as an Assistant District Attorney in Sedgwick County, KS and Douglas County, KS and opened and now runs the non-profit legal Clinic for the Kansas City Immigration Court.

Moderating the event is Missy Koonce.

Abram Fernandez, a Chicano poet who lives and works in Kansas City reads an original piece he is creating especially for the event; and Summer Osborne, an award winning American singer-songwriter performs her rendition of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and her popular and moving song “This is Your Call”.
