Is It Okay to Eat the Fish?

Elaine Geisel will talk about the Fukushima radiation scare in bluefin tuna and the
whole concept of sustainable fisheries. She’ll have a website where folks
can look at recommended fish to buy and/or eat in restaurants. . There’s a lot of controversy between the folks who support local economies and “cultures” based on old fishing habits and the scientists who are charged with keeping fish populations healthy. I can also talk about the problem with “fishing down the food web” and with
depletion of “forage fish” and the impacts on marine food chains.

We will then talk with Laura Calwell, Keeper of the Kaw River, about
problems with eating freshwater fish in Kansas. She’ll talk about her
organization Friends of the Kaw and what they are doing to protect the
river. She was involved in studying the fish in a lake in WyCo and can
tell us what they found.
