Jay Coghlan: “50 Ways to Leave Your Nukes” (Part 1)

This week on The Forum, we are pleased to bring you part one of a two-part address given by Jay Coghlan, executive director of Nuclear Watch New Mexico, at the All Souls UU Church on November 6, 2013. The address explores why the federal government isn’t funding comprehensive nuclear clean-up at the Bannister Federal Complex, whose ownership has been transferred to a private real estate developer. According to Coghlan, “The KC plant cranks out thousands of components each year, but the most egregious thing (about moving the complex to the new site) is that the feds are going to walk away from the mess at Bannister. The site is known to have volatile organics and PCBs above legal standards.” Coghlan says it is a “festering hell-hole”, and that demolishing the buildings and parking lots to create new offices could allow rainwater to push the plume toxins offsite.
