Joan Baez

This week on From the Vault, we pay tribute to singer, songwriter, and activist Joan Baez. In a career spanning more than five decades, Baez’s discography is well-known, lengthy and diverse; her activism is as well. The Civil Rights Movement, the Free Speech Movement, Vietnam, the death penalty, LGBT rights, and various environmental causes have kept Baez busy over the years – and also close to Pacifica Radio. In this episode, we’ll reach back and revisit a 1964 recording of Baez performing at UC Berkeley during the free speech protests. We’ll also hear Baez deliver an address to the members of Pi Chi, a youth organization at Piedmont Community Church in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969.
