Julio’s Holiday Special 2013

This week on From the Vault we present KPFK host Julio Martinez’s annual holiday radio drama, an original story called The Christmas Truce. Based on true events, The Christmas Truce is set in the battle trenches of World War One, when German and Allied troops spontaneously dropped their weapons and met in no-man’s land on Christmas Eve to sing songs and exchange gifts. First, though, we present two previous plays by Julio Martinez and performed by his Arts in Review Repertory Players: The Gift of the Magi, written by celebrated storyteller O. Henry, and the Story of the Nutcracker, a behind-the-scenes look at Tchaikovsky’s celebrated opera.

From the Vault is presented through the Pacifica Radio Archives Preservation and Access Project, funded in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, past grants from the Grammy Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the American Archive funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, along with the generous support of Pacifica Radio Listeners.
