Lance Canales

This week on Art of the Song our guest is singer-songwriter-blues-artist, Lance Canales. Lance was born and raised in the southern foothills of California’s Central Valley where he literally lived the life so many folk and blues artists have written songs about: hard labor, one room shacks, and taunting ghosts whispering of a better life. In February 2013 Lance Canales released the single Deportee: Plane Wreck at Los Gatos. Originally written by Woody Guthrie in 1948, the song has been covered by many stellar musicians, but what makes Lance’s version so important is that it reveals the names of the Mexican nationals that were simply dubbed as “deportees” in the original news article. We spoke with Lance in front of a live audience at the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah, Oklahoma.
