Legendary Music Producer/Engineer Eddie Kramer

Former KPFK Music host Carlos Nino sat down with Eddie Kramer on November 28, 2010 the day after Jimi’s 68th birthday to trace the trajectory of their brief but important time together as Eddie helped capture and realize Jimi’s groundbreaking vision on his 3 studio albums, 1967’s Are You Experienced, also 1967’s Axis Bold As Love and 1968’s Electric Ladyland as a trio and Jimi Hendrix’s 1970 Band of Gypsies record.

Eddie Kramer was also the recording engineer to the legendary 1969 Woodstock Concert.

I met Carlos Nino when he was 17, as a volunteer programmer at Pacifica Radio KPFK Los Angeles in 1995, where he began his program All At One Point. I had the pleasure of being his engineer to present some of his early live music presentations . including the first Dwight Tribble performance, a 2 hour Cut Chemist DJ Numark set, Saul Williams west coast poetry debut and The reunion tour of Gil Scott Heron with long time collaborator and keyboard player Brian Jackson for the first time together since 1980 ( I actually saw that last show while a freshman at UCLA and didn’t know that was Brian Jackson’s last show with Heron until he told me that night).

In 2015, in true Carlos form, He voluntarily hung up his KPFK turntables to pursue other creative ventures. In the 20 years he was on the air, he selflessly poured his heart and soul to bring the Los Angeles and internet audience his most beautiful, creative, soulful and poetic vision each and every week.

This interview captures the growth in Carlos over the years as an inquisitive host, simultaneously learning from and sharing with his audience the stories from a Grand Master about his craft.

Eddie Kramer does not disappoint and gives some gems about meeting Jimi Hendrix, working with him, embracing the creative process with him and even sneaking a few photos of him while at work.
