The Midwest Innocence Project presents Faces of Innocence Wednesday May 8, 2013, Muehlebach Towers, 200 W 12th St, KCMO.
The Midwest Innocence Project brings to KC Raymond Santana, one of five teenagers convicted of raping the “Central Park Jogger” in 1989. He served more than 6 years in prison before he was exonerated. Raymond is joined by Sarah Burns author of the highly acclaimed book “The Central Park Five”. Add presentation of the Sean O’Brien Freedom Award to the family of former Jackson County Legislator and Prosecutor and you have one heck of a fundraiser. The next program sponsored by the KC Chapter of Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty will be Tuesday May 7th, 6:30pm at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, 4501 Warwick Blvd, KCMO. The featured speaker will be The Rev’d R. Stan Runnels. He is an ordained priest of the Episcopal Church and early in his ministry he served about four years as a volunteer chaplain at Parchman Penitentiary in Mississippi serving the inmates and staff of the prison’s “Death Row.”

Local Author Christine McDonald will have a meet and greet for those interested in her book “Cry Purple”. This is the story of the author’s long journey prostitution, crack addiction and homelessness in Kansas City to her present life of blindness, motherhood and happiness. The book also details some of the work she does on behalf of the blind, drug addicts, ex-cons, prostitutes and others.

The monthly meeting of the Criminal Justice Task Force will be Monday, May 6th from 6:45 to 8:45PM at the Church of the Good Shepard, 4947 Chouteau Drive, KCMO. They are asking that you bring non perishable food items or canned goods for the Good Shepard Back Pack Program that provides food for needy children to take home with them from school. Kansas City VA Medical Center’s 2K “walk and roll” event kicks off, Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 12 pm on the medical center campus 4801 Linwood Blvd,KCMO. The event will run through 2:30 pm and is filled with music, food, and games. This year our theme will be “Home Run for Homeless Vets”, Individual participants and teams are asked to dress in keeping with the theme. Team members are also asked but not required to consider a $3.00 donation that will allow homeless veterans who have been placed in permanent housing to purchase necessary household items.
Pre-registration is not required. Plan to arrive at the north parking lot no later than 30 minutes prior to the event. There is a required waiver and release of liability/publicity for each person when you check in.
