People’s Hearing on Clean Air & Water

The Sierra Club hosted the People’s Hearing for Clean Air and Water to look at the impact Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) budget cuts will have on community health.

Speakers discussed how projected budget cuts will change the effectiveness of the Clean Air Act by reducing the limits now placed on corporations on the release of dangerous pollutants like mercury, arsenic, carbon pollution and methane. They specifically addressed how the cuts will impact the residents of the Kansas City metro area.

The People’s Hearing for Clean Air and Water was held from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Thursday, July 27 at the Plaza Branch Library, 4801 Main St., Kansas City. Speakers included:

•Geoff Jolley, office of Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, II
•Robin Martinez, Board Member, Heartland Alliance
•James Torres, Samuel Rodgers Health Center
•Jennifer Byer, mother of a child with asthma
•Jay Portnoy, Children’s Mercy Asthma & Allergy
•Jennifer Lowry, Children’s Mercy Toxicology
•Sara Campbell, military veteran
*DaRon McGee, State Representative from Missouri’s 36th district
