Why do Prosecutors Overcharge Suspects? and Sankofa For Kansas City ~ A 10 Point Plan With Bobby Seale

Why do Prosecutors Overcharge Suspects?

Prosecutors overcharge suspects all the time in an effort to coerce them to plead guilty, to get them to testify against others, to pad their conviction numbers and other reasons. In today’s atmosphere where the notion of innocent till proven guilty has been turned on its head, many people are convicted of much more serious crimes than the evidence supports resulting in much longer sentences and contributing to overcrowding in our prisons. Is it up to the Judges to deny those more serious but unsupported charges? Can juries really be expected to understand when a suspect is being overcharged?

Host Latahra Smith talks with Attorney Taylor Rikard of the Kent E. Gipson Law Firm about the issues that overcharging creates in the legal system. The Gipson law firm focuses exclusively on representing citizens that have been accused or convicted of crimes at both trial and on appeal.

Sankofa For Kansas City ~ A 10 Point Plan With Bobby Seale
Bobby Seale

The word Sankofa is a word in the Twi language of Ghana that translates to “Go back and get it” Many folks here in Kansas City realize that we are facing the same problems that the founders of the Black Panther Party were trying to address with their 10 point plan of the 1960s. There is an effort here to develop a 10 point plan or 11, 12…. to address the problems we face today and build the community we want rather than the conditions that are being forced on us. While many know the CoIntelPro message of the Black Panthers as violent revolutionaries, few know of their programs that fed and educated children who were hungry and being failed by a separate but equal myth. Most do not know that the health clinics open to all the Panthers developed were the forerunner of community health clinics we still see today.

Host Jeff Humfeld talks with Reverend Ester Holzendorf about the efforts to write a 10 point plan for here and now based on the framework of the Panther’s 10 point plan. In May of this year Black Panther Party founder Bobby Seale comes to Kansas City to help organize the implementation and realization of today’s plan.
