Pullman Porters: The Making of the Black Middle Class in KC

After the Civil War until World War II, one of the few good jobs open to African American men and a few women as Pullman Porter or Maid. To be sure, they weren’t treated as equals and had to hustle for every nickel, but in a world of segregation, porters helped create a black middle class in Kansas City and around the country.
