Reparations in Kenya

After the 2007 / 2008 post election violence, the Kenyan government established a Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) to help heal historical grievances. The TJRC looked into injustices and human rights violations that happened between 1963 and 2008, and compiled a report that outlines a reparations framework for a broad range of rights violations, including sexual violence. Now, the international lobby group Human Rights Watch is calling on the Kenyan government to speed up the exercise of compensating victims. Speakers in this program are a rape survivor of the 1984 Wagalla Massacre of ethnic Somalis by Kenyan security forces, a survivor of the 2007-8 post-election violence by rebels and Kenyan military in western Kenya, and Agnes Odhiambo, a researcher with the women’s rights division of Human Rights Watch.
