While we have entered a period in our country where confrontation and recrimination are the order of the day there are still those that are working to bring about mediation and restitution when harm has been done. Today the subject of our show is Restorative Justice and in particular Senate Bill 154 in the Missouri Legislature. In the words of our guest This bill allows for Restorative Justice for adult offenders on probation.

Restorative Justice is an opportunity for offenders to be held accountable to the victim and the community. It is only used if the offender is remorseful and willing to repair the harm they have caused. Victims are never made to be present, and only are if in fact they choose to be. Victims, offenders and community members meet together, and the victim can get her questions answered, and tell the offender the impact of the crime. Offenders must be ready to find ways of repairing the harm. It has proven transformational for both, giving greater satisfaction with the CJ system and healing for the victim, and lowering recidivism rates for the offender.

Host Nancy Leazer talks with Joanne Katz, J.D., Professor of Legal Studies in the Department of Criminal Justice, Legal Studies and Social Work at Missouri Western State University. They will talk about the Principles of restorative justice and how this bill can help heal our communities, those who have been wronged and give a new sense of responsibility to those who have offended. This approach has proven successful at reducing recidivism rates of offenders and saving money for the state.
