Rigoberta Menchu: Addressing the International Indian Treaty Council

In 1993, the International Year of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Menchu addressed the International Indian Treaty Council about working together to change the relationships between the nations of the North and indigenous communities around the world. Program updated in 2018.

Rigoberta Mench Tum is a K’iche’ Mayan indigenous, women’s and poor people’s rights activist from Guatemala. She fled to Mexico after the murders of her family by the Guatemalan military. In 1992, she received the Nobel Peace Prize, and she was one of the founders of the Nobel Women’s Initiative.
