The Solidarity Economy

A new documentary production group, Upstream (“Inviting you to unlearn everything you thought you knew about economics”), brings you the Solidarity Economy–a phenomenon in which the forces of exploitation that Capitalism promotes are countered by the forces of mutual aid, such as credit unions, affordable housing strategies, and so on. We learn of its recent origins in 1990s Peru and before that, during the Great Depression; indeed, the Solidarity Economy is strengthened during times of crisis. We also dream about its potential in the face of ecological peril and plan for what it will take to grow the Solidarity Economy to serve as a movement of movements.

Featuring:

Caroline Woolard – artist & organizer whose work explores intersections between art and the solidarity economy; Michael Lewis – solidarity economy researcher; co-author of The Resilience Imperative; Pat Conaty – research associate, Cooperatives UK.
