The Trial Of The Medicare 23; and The Missouri CURE Conference In KC This Month

The Trial Of The Medicare 23

Clergy from across the state of Missouri conferred in 2014 and decided they had to address what they saw as mean spirited agenda in the legislature that was hurting families in the state. They decided to go to Jefferson City to lobby and pray for their human dignity concerns to be addressed by the legislature. Medicare expansion was part of a wider agenda that led these ministers to occupy the Senate gallery to pray and sing and stop the business of the day. At the time they were briefly detained by the capital police and peacefully removed from the Senate gallery.

Over the course of the next two years they were threatened with arrest if they returned to the capital, months after the incident they were formerly charged by the county prosecutor and subsequently convicted of trespassing in the part of the capital set aside for visitors. Host Melvin Merritt talks with Rod Chappel, the lawyer for these 23 Clergy throughout this process. He will explain the legal and political wranglings of the past two years and what happens next.
