Tibet and China: Spirituality Vs. Materialism

John Shuck of KBOO speaks with Penpa Tsering, the new Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the Office of Tibet, based in Washington DC. Tsering explains how 13 centuries of Buddhism has shaped the people of Tibet, and how difficult it is for them to negotiate with a materialistic, atheistic power such as China, which has long been exploiting Tibet’s natural resources and abusing her land and rivers.

Tsering, who served as speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile for several years before taking his new post in Washington this May, urges the U.S. to pressure China to resolve the Tibet crisis peacefully. He and John also speculate upon how the Tibtetan people’s spiritual resources may be a beacon in a dark time of destruction for our shared Earth home.

The Beloved Community is an hour-long program produced monthly at KBOO in Portland, Oregon by John Shuck. The focus of the show is resources for activism. John also produces a weekly 29 minute program, Progressive Spirit with the focus on spirituality and social justice.
