Trans Talk: Challenges of Undocumented Transgender Immigrants and AB1266 – The School Opportunity and Success Act

Trans Talk, this week’s edition of The Tenth Voice, is hosted by Sandra Meade and produced by Linda Wilson.   On this show we explore the challenges faced by undocumented transgender immigrants who end up in the United States immigration system.  We’ll also learn the truth about AB 1266, The School Opportunity and Success Act for transgender students which went into effect in California on January 1st, 2014.

The first interview guest is Claire Swinford, a “gap” advocate in the trans* community. We’ll talk to her about the undocumented trans* immigrant population, their incarceration in America’s detention facilities, and the difficult challenges they face.

The second interview guest is Eli Erlick, Executive Director of Trans Student Equality Resources. We’ll be discussing AB 1266, The School Opportunity and Success Act, a bill which helps ensure California students have access to the facilities and activities corresponding to their gender identity. The bill was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown last year, and a determined campaign by anti-transgender activists is currently underway to stop the bill in California.

And of course, we’ll round out the show with the Community Calendar, researched and presented by Michael Poppa.
