Reverend Wallace Hartsfield SR and Reverend Ester Holzendorf

There are people in our community whose names we know and some whose names we don’t that make a difference. They stand up to injustice, protect those who need protection, demand accountability from our elected officials and governmental departments. They have an impact on the quality of life and the availability of opportunity in our city and the wider community. Today we talk with two of those people to find out why they give of themselves for the greater good.

Reverend Wallace Hartsfield was spiritual leader at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years. He was involved in civil rights and justice issues throughout his life in the Kansas City area, and nationally. He marched has alongside Martin Luther King, worked with Jesse Jackson in Operation PUSH and was involved in the leadership of the National Coalition of Black Churches. Reverend Hartsfield is now Pastor Emeritus of the Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church but his work for civil and human rights continues with his work in the formation and leadership of the statewide Human Dignity, Economic Justice Coalition.

Reverend Ester Holzendorf worked for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections as a guard and working into a position to set policy and direct operations within the DOC. When she moved to Kansas City she began working for Jackson County Social Services as a social worker. She is an ordained minister and is President of the Board of Consolidated Social Work Services. Reverend Holzendorf was also involved in the formation of the Human Dignity, Economic Justice Coalition and is an active member of the coalition.
