Unist’ot’en Pipeline Resistance

The indigenous and sovereign Unist’ot’en people in Canada’s British Columbia never made treaties or ceded land. Today, they wage resistance against pipelines across their land that they do not authorize. Until recently, they have maintained a resistance camp and healing center to “heal the people, heal the land.”

Chris Nelson from The Peace and Social Justice Show on KZFR in Chico, Ca interviews Karla Tait, Unist’ot’en tribal member and director of the Unist’ot’en Healing Center in British Columbia.

Recently, Canadian military have broken a blockade against entry onto unceded Wet’suwet’en land in violation of sovereign rights affirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada and the U.N. This is for a coastal oil fracked gas pipeline across British Columbia for export to Asia.

If the pipelines are allowed to cross, there is no other force that will stop sharp worldwide increases in carbon pollution from tarsands oil/ fracked gas methane. Reconciliation, decolonization and legal assistance are needed.

Chris and Karla discuss what has happened and what the future might hold for this region in Canada and the world.
